The 2026 KANpaign
During the 2026 University Council Elections cycle, KAN had the honor to win the hearts of over 1000 students through a strong campaign comprising five main principles. We secured 2 seats in the University Council, along with 6 seats in three different Faculty Councils! These were our core principles:
-
Many students have great, innovative ideas, but no real way to turn their thoughts into actual change. KAN proposes a student initiative procedure, where students may sign a self-made petition that, upon receiving a sufficient number of signatures, must be discussed by the University Council or relevant Faculty Council. This way, we are giving our students a voice even after the elections!
-
Students deserve nothing but the best when it comes to quality of education. We propose mandatory tutor standardization procedures, creating a system where tutors need to go through strict training to ensure grading is consistent across different student and academic tutors. Furthermore, we propose that the grading of each tutor should be overseen by another anonymous tutor at all times to ensure a multi-step agreement that benefits students and creates grading transparency.
-
KAN’s core principle has always been keeping our planet and our campus green. That’s why we are proposing implementing Statiegeld machines all around campus to incentivize recycling and a circular economy in our student body.
Furthermore, we are aware nobody can prevent students and staff from using AI, however, at least we can do our best to reduce its environmental influence. This is why we propose a university-wide professional subscription to Euria, a Swiss AI model that runs 100% on renewable energy. This way, we give our students and staff the AI tools they want and need, whilst prioritizing the University’s sustainable development goals.
-
We want to be proud of our university. That’s why we urge all University bodies to cut all ties with institutions who are involved in UN-recognized human rights violations, including, but not limited to, genocide and occupation. KAN is, additionally, requesting more transparency on the University’s partnerships with all international actors.
We also propose the formation of a safe space (such as an Ethics Team) where students can discuss and research real-world international issues and share them with the University body.
-
Student wellbeing is a top priority to us. This is why we are advocating for faculty-specific psychologists in every faculty. While university-wide psychologists are available to students, for proper support, psychologists and mental health specialists who are aware of faculty-specific procedures and programs would greatly increase mutual understanding for students. This way, we can also reduce waiting lists for mental health support in our university.
UM is one of the most culturally rich universities in the Netherlands. As such, we propose the introduction of dedicated prayer rooms in every faculty, to make sure all students can thrive both mentally and academically, but also spiritually.
